Title Review

It a beautiful catalogue showing the 308 at-once-engaging sculptures that form a part of the collection of the Maharana of Mewar Charitable Foundation (MMCF), Udaipur. And what makes it the only one of its kind is that it documents an unbroken tradition of sculptures from the AD 7th century to the 20th century from a specific region of India. Significantly, these sculptures capture both the magnificence and spirituality of Mewar from the larger mainstream of Rajasthan’s grand temple-building tradition. Included in the book are also six essays which, written by distinguished scholars, look at these sculptures from fresh perspectives of art history, iconography, thematic content, craftsmanship, and the very act of temple building.

Dr Alka Pande: a well-known art historian and extensively published author, is currently a consultant, art adviser, and curator of Visual Art Gallery at the India Habitat Centre, New Delhi.
