Title Review

The study revolves around the relationship between space and transitional identity in Kazakhstan in the post-Soviet period. The emerging discourses about cosmopolitanism suggest multiple interactions -- the diversities and heterogeneities, the encounters, the networks, the challenges, and the ways of living. The current Kazakhstan’s cosmopolitan setting, says the author, is defined by Central Asian dynamics in the post-Soviet situation: sociocultural conditions, a worldview, multiple subjects held in unison – i.e. a concentric circle approach of a cosmopolitan world and an attitude or disposition or behaviour that is largely acquired through experience, especially travel. Kazakh borderlands have a completely different profile – that of shared space. The Kazakhs’ attachment to their homeland is a constant – but the question is whether that territorial reality fits into other paradigms of identity and belonging.

Suchandana Chatterjee is Honorary Associate, China Centre, University of Calcutta.
