Title Review

Craftsmen and designers of an earlier era were able to use stone effectively to produce masterpieces of art and architecture. Stone offers magnificent natural compositions in the vast expanses of the countryside, and stone constructions reflect high craftsmanship. This book takes up the stone works of the past in India, focusing on the art of the builders of Mahabalipuram, Ellora, Elephanta, Badami and other places.

This volume is a semi-philosophical, semi-aesthetic appreciation of the stone structures of the past. There is an attempt to rediscover a quest for meaning and the relationship with the cosmos through this study of the stone structures. The work showcases the structures as the result of the work of designers, artists, and craftsmen of a bygone age who manifested qualities in a building that are rarely seen today. Richly illustrated, it features a host of architectural works that are among structures that have come to largely characterise the architectural past and richness of India. It features Elephanta and Dalavanur caves as well as Mahabalipuram sculptures, Ellora caves, Elephanta caves, monuments like pavilions and temples of the Vijayanagar kingdom and a number of other architectural elements associated with dynasties and kingdoms and cultural traditions of the past.

Ramu Katakam, a practising architect for the last four decades, has been conducting research on the traditional architecture of India. His first book, Glimpses of Architecture in Kerala: Temples and Palaces, was published in 2006.

Clare Arni is a photographer based in Bangalore, India. Her work encompasses architecture, social documentary, and cultural heritage. She has contributed to international magazines and many Indian publications. She has exhibited internationally as well.

Joginder Singh, an architect by training, specialises in architectural photography. His published works include Glimpses of Architecture in Kerala and Forts and Palaces of India.
