Banudatta’s (fifteenth century) treatise Rasamanjari is significant in being the first text to exclusively deal with classification of nayakas and nayikas. It presents the 138 verses in Sanskrit along with its Roman transliteration and its translation in English and a detailed commentary based on study of other commentaries in Sanskrit. Illustrated with pictures, it deals with the qualities, feelings and attitudes of love and other emotions of nayakas and nayikas (heroines) and their associates like friends and messengers. It depicts the kinds of nayakas and nayikas presented in Rasamanjari and classifies them in a language that is descriptive and filled with poetic allusions and romantic longings. | | Top |
