Title Review

The essays by historians, botanists and specialists in indigenous and Western medicine t show the evolution of the medicinal system in India and the way it has adapted itself to the challenges posed by Western medical science. They discuss the development of medicine and public health under the patronage of Jahangir, the efficacy of the Ayurvedic medicinal system in dealing with epidemics and fatal diseases, and the story of vaccination in Bengal and the responses to it. They view the rich heritage of folk and tribal medicine among the tribes of Birbhum and the development of organised documentation of ethno-botanical medicine in India. They discuss the problems that have hampered development of indigenous medicine in India like shortcomings in the field of surgery and lack of proper scientific research. They bring out conflict and collaboration between Ayurvedic, Unani and allopathic modern medicine in India.
