Title Review

The book studies Indian English novels that have dealt with the theme of partition of the Indian subcontinent in 1947. It discusses the general nature of the historical political novel. It shows how the novels examine the causes and effects of the partition by using motifs and symbols like the motif of love for bridging the emotionally divided minds and the symbol of the train to denote desertion and death. It points out their emphasis on the healthy, sane human relationships amidst a background of chaos and destruction. It covers noted novels like Khushwant Singh’s Train to Pakistan, 1956, Chaman Nahal’s Azadi (1975) and Manju Kapur’s Home, 2006.
