The work deals with the concepts, beliefs and traditions relating to death, the concept of immortality and the karmic cycle. Examining the Hindu scriptural texts and secular classical works, it discusses the funeral rites and rituals in Hinduism, giving their meanings and going into their relevance for the soul and for the living. It deals with the concepts of atman, delusion or maya, kala denoting time and dream, and explains how the soul tries to overcome the cycle of life and death or the concept of moksha. It also presents a comparative study of Hindu traditions and other systems of belief on the aspect of death.
