India has one of the largest collections of medical manuscripts of any civilisation in the world, however the published texts which are in contemporary use represent less than 2% of these manuscripts. In the absence of a dedicated conservation programme, there exists a real danger of losing this treasure of ancient medical knowledge, due to negligence. Against the said backdrop, the national Mission for manuscripts, New Delhi, organised a national seminar on ‘saving India’s Medical manuscripts’, which brought together scholars and experts from all over the country. This proceedings volume compiles about a score of the presentations of the event which provide important information about the wealth and extent of Indian medical that exist within and outside India and also make pragmatic suggestions for their conservation, interpretation, compilation and digital documentation.
