Title Review

It is a painstakingly researched, ethnographic account of Kabelias -- also known as Jogi Nath Sanperas (Snake Charmers), of Rajasthan, North India. Showing how this community exemplifies Weissleder''s hypothesis of a symbiotic interaction between fixed and mobile populations -- with non-pastoral nomads being an advantageous adjunct to sedentary society, the author describes Kalbelias'' occupation as ''snake charmers'', beggars, and healers; their economic strategies; their religious orientation as Jogi Naths; their marriage system; their customs concerning death and inheritance; and their Panchayat for the settlement of disputes.

Miriam Robertson studied social anthropology at the London School of Economics. And is known to have a life-long interest in non-pastoral nomadism.
