Title Review

Gandhi’s seminal role in the freedom struggle gets inextricably linked to his deconstruction and reformulation of the Hindu-Muslim problem. He, however, failed to bring about a reconciliation between these two major communities of India and, consequently, its partition. Partition, as he conceded, was like vivisection of his own body. Accordingly, to prevent it and restore the unity of India meant his life’s mission. Professor Naidu’s research tries to reconstruct the last phase of Gandhi’s life (1944-48), focussing primarily on his efforts to end Hindu-Muslim schism. Based chiefly on primary sources, the book offers an insightful analysis of the major events of the period, like Gandhi-Jinnah talks, Simla Conference, Cabinet Mission, Hindu-Muslim Riots and, finally, his Martyrdom.

Dr Ch M Naidu is former Professor of History, Andhra University.
