Grants by which the king alientated his right to collect land revenue and other taxes from a given area, for the life-time of the grantee, have an ancient history in India. Based on a close study of available archival records, the present work is an attempt to understand the contemporary revenue assignment system in the Mewar region of Rajputana (during 17th and 18th century). The assignments given to different clans and castes have been examined and the assessed land revenue figures have been analysed to interpret the nature of revenue assignments, the obligations of the assignee and their proprietory rights, and other important features of the system, that throw light on the socio-political and economic conditions of the region.
