Title Review

Drawing from his observations during field study in the former princely states of South-Rajasthan and also from a close study of the relevant archival material, S L Doshi -- an expert on the affairs of the Indian tribals, analyses the relations of the tribals with the feudal rulers, in this volume. Doshi holds the view that feudalism in this part of the country was a form of government keeping the tribals isolated. And isolation for centuries landed the tribals to a social structure characterised by land alienation, backwardness, exploitation and discrimination. He also argues that the subalterns among the tribals continue to suffer from discrimination as they had suffered in the past.

The study is an outcome of a Senior Research Fellowship granted to the author by the Indian Council of Social Science Research, New Delhi.
