Title Review

Highly important, geopolitically as well as strategically, Sikkim as a state is sandwiched between two unyielding neighbours, India and China and has been buffer throughout history. After centuries of hereditary monarchy, it became a Protectorate state of the Indian Union in 1950 and finally a constituent unit of India in 1975. Present well-researched and well-documented work is an attempt to analyse and identify the diverse facts and factors that led to Sikkim’s merger with India. Besides examining in detail the various domestic and international factors responsible for the merger of Sikkim, the study covers all other aspects of Sikkim, the study covers all other aspects of Sikkim’s political history including the China factor and the democratic movements. The study draws upon an indepth survey of primary and secondary materials and author’s deep interaction with the local people during her several visits to Sikkim.

Dr. Shefali Raizada teaches History at Amity University, India.
