The book focuses on the incredibly beautiful Buddhist Cave complex of Kizil, an important conduit in the transmission of Buddhist art and thought along the Silk Road from India to China. Located in the Xinjiang Autonomous Region of China, the visual imagery at Kizil provides an insight into the processes of adoption, adaptation, and transformation of myriad influences that crisscrossed the region during 3rd-8th centuries CE. Included here are the writings of eminent scholars who have studied the images at Kizil as well as Kizil artefacts and manuscripts housed in different parts of the world. Importantly, numerous Kizil murals, which were removed in the “archaeological raids” by European explorers in the early 20th century, are today housed in over 30 institutions across 12 countries. The book is lavishly illustrated.
Rajeshwari Ghose, a well-known scholar of Hindu-Buddhist sacred art, retired from the Department of Fine Arts, University of Hong Kong.
