Title Review

Present monograph reports a well-researches study of the trade relations between the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan and the neighbouring Assam state of the Indian Union, during the period (1865 -- 1949) that witnessed the end of Ahom monarchy and establishment of the British regime in Assam. Based on a close scrutiny of the available primary source material, including the official records, the study examines the nature and composition of the trade between the two regions, the relevant colonial policies and political treaties, and the impact of the trade on the socio-economic life of Assam. Specially explored is the significance and role of ‘Duars’ -- the passes and valley that led to the hills, in developing the mutual trade.
