Title Review

With a fascinating account of M K Gandhi’s activities, experiences, and contacts in London and South Africa, Professor James D Hunt tries to bring out the complex influences that metamorphosed this anglophile lawyer into the Mahatma of historical myth. Each chapter, in the book, includes rich detail about the personalities, history, and politics of the various influences; the circumstances through which Gandhi encountered them; and the extent and nature of impact that each had on the development of Gandhi’s religious and political beliefs. Although each chapter has its particular emphasis, Gandhi was not exposed to these influences serially, but often simultaneously, and the articles recognize that. Both historiography and analysis are present in all parts of this volume

James D Hunt, (b. 1931), is Emeritus Professor in Humanities and Philosophy, Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina, USA.
