Title Review

Emphasising the role tradition and customary laws play in tribal societies, the book examines the nature and application of these laws among Nagas. It makes a detailed study of the laws with reference to various civil and criminal aspects: marriage and divorce, burial, rules of inheritance, widowhood, taking of oaths, disputes, poisoning, arson, debt, cheating and betrayal and homicide. It deals with the Naga religion and clans, their ceremonies and rituals, and position of Naga women to present a deeper understanding of the setting in which Naga laws operate. The focus is on the laws of the Rengma tribe, a distinct tribe with its own laws, customs and traditions.
