Title Review

Focussing primarily on Chapter Two of Bharata''s Natyasastra, the book captures an authoritative profile of the classical Indian theatre architecture -- with special emphasis on the real nature of Natyasastra tradition of the Sanskrit drama. Professor Panchal draws on architectural, archaeological and literary sources, including classical Sanskrit plays not only to recreate the theatre of Bharata, but also to get to grips with some of the practical problems concerning terminology, functional divisions of the stage, and the modes of presenting Sanskrit plays before the modern audiences. Thus, without restricting himself to the physical theatrical space, the author extends his enquiry into action on the stage and the dramatic presentation.

Goverdhan Panchal, former Professor of Scenic Designing & Theatre Architecture, National School of Drama, New Delhi, is the recipient of several prestigious awards/honours, including the National Award from Sangeet Natak Akademi. And also author of half-a-dozen books on theatre.
