This pictorial documentation is a modest attempt to present the World of Ram Kumar, one of the formost living artist of India -- the painter, the writer. It provides a comprehensive narrative on different phases in Ram''s painting career, the critical responses his works evoked, and his paintings (mostly oil on canvas) from 1950s to 1990s.
This book covers the work of the artist for over 45 years, dating from early fifties until the present day-starting from his early period of struggle, his Varanasi days and his figurative works mostly concentrating on early industrialisation of India and unemployed youth, a very contemporary and pertinent subject of those days to his present achievement as a leading artist of Indian Contemporary Art. It amply shows the originality of approach adopted by the artist from early days and his own means of realising it in his work. It also gives an insight of Ram Kumar''s personality, as an artist, a philosopher and a writer in his own right.
