Title Review

The Battle of Plassey, 1757, is one of the momentous events in Indian history. Resulting in the British East India Company’s victory over the Nawab of Bengal, Plassey’s victory emboldened the Company to steadily expand its dominance over the next hundred years. Even if Indians could not check this expansion, they offered stiff ‘resistance’ to the foreign rule. This book tells, in detail, the story of this ‘resistance’, specially by the Muslims of India, during this long phase preceding national struggle for freedom. Covering a hundred years: from the Battle of Plassey (1757) to the Proclamation of the Queen (1858), the book highlights how Indian Muslims: whether nobility, clerics or the subalterns, put up a strong resistance to colonial expansion in India.

Dr Kamaluddin Ahmed, (b. 1941): a scholar of history, retired as Principal of Karimganj College, Assam.
