Title Review

Dr Nandini Kapur analyses the evolution and nature of state in early medieval India with specific reference to the regional history of Rajasthan. She examines the political, social, economic and ideological processes that aided in making the regional state of Mewar between the seventh and fifteenth centuries, arguing against the viewpoint that Mewar had a mere feudatory status. The book focuses on the political and geographical integration carried out by the Guhila rulers to bring together various sub-regions into a regional state of Mewar by allowing local Rajputs and social groups a place in the political and administrative hierarchies. It also shows how the different groups viewed the Guhila state.
