Title Review

The Last Sunset: The Rise and Fall of the Lahore Durbar tries to bring out some of the lesser-known facets of the Sikh history. Beginning with the rise of the Sikh empire in the northwestern regions of India – under its legendary ruler, Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the book shows how Ranjit Singh’s death in 1839 not only spelt disaster for the Sikh empire, but also simultaneously gave the British an opportunity to annex it. Amarinder Singh offers the first-ever meticulously detailed account of the two Anglo-Sikh Wars of 1845 and 1848. Amarinder Singh: a descendant of the erstwhile royal family of Patiala, is the former Chief Minister of Punjab (2002-2007).
