Title Review

The volume presents a fresh assessment of the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) and its performance during the first phase, 2005-2012. The essays examine aspects of the mission relating to strengthening of the primary health care system, information system in the NRHM, sanitation needs of India and the role of the NRHM, and infant mortality in pre- and post-NRHM period. Incorporating state-level experiences, they deal with issues covered by it such as population stabilisation, infant mortality and child health outcomes, front-line health works, community participation in health and good governance for health management. Presenting numerous statistics, they highlight implementation issues related to NRHM particularly the complexities of community engagement and improving social determinants particularly sanitation and poverty alleviation. They aim to elicit concerns that deserve policy focus like the huge shortfalls in human resource for health and the large internal migration and neglect of health of migrants across urban slums.
