Title Review

The book is an attempt to read the Harappan script by analysing and reading the Harappan signs and inscriptions on seals and other places. Relying on visual bilingual interpretation of Harappan artistic motifs for reading the signs, it observes that there are parallels between motifs of the Harappan inscriptions and signs and Rigvedic metaphors which cannot be explained away as coincidences. This shows that the imageries of the two cultures had a common cultural stream as its course. It argues that the Harappan script is logo-syllabic with very little grammatical content but the language of the script appears to be Aryan. Explaining what the inscriptions reveal and examining the seals by indicating those that are rare, it shows that Rigvedic political, cultural and social concepts are reflected in Harappan inscriptions which again show that ancestors of the Roigvedic people were part of the Harappan social milieu. Citing Vedic verses and giving their meanings and reproducing the signs and inscriptions of the Hrappans along with illustrations on their seals and other objects, it offers a fresh insight into the issue of understanding and interpreting the Harappan script.

The author Vijayendra nourishes a deep interest in ancient Indian history archaeology and literature. He is at present serving as chairman, Board of Secondary Education in the state of Chhattisgarh.
