Title Review

The book presents studies on the connections between the coastal areas and the hinterland, urban morphology, growth of port cities and littoral societies in the context of urbanisation and trade in Gujarat and its role in the Indian Ocean maritime activities relating to trade. Specialists provide innovative perspectives on the importance of port cities as vital hubs that enabled connections with other cities and cultures across the Indian Ocean and beyond through trade contacts and as cultural centres attracting men from other lands. They explore particular cities like Bharuch, Lakhpat, Mundra, Mandvi, Surat, Diu and others, covering a vast period from the port towns of the Harappan times in the Gujarat state to port towns of colonial times. With notes and references to books on the subject, they study the Parsi trading world in port towns, travellers’ accounts on them, colonial merchants in the port towns and the issue of piracy.
