The volume presents the proceedings of the Punjab History Conference held in March 2011 to throw light on aspects of history, people and society of north India, particularly Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir. With case studies, the volume, containing papers in English and Punjabi, deals with the state of religion and politics in ancient and medieval Punjab, including customs like sati and Shaivism in the area. The papers focus on colonial Punjab: the colonial state; the Mughal emperor and the Company; politics and law with special reference to women’s rights; the nationalists and economic aspects of the region. They examine issues relating to the Punjabi diaspora as well.
