Title Review

The volume traces the penetration of Persian into India’s literary and emotional life for centuries, Indian self-confidence in the Persian language and the decline of the self-confidence with the British gaining foothold. It focuses on the influence and role of Sirajuddin Ali Khan-e Arzu (1689-1756) and the Persian lexicographers active in the eighteenth century. It presents an account in English of Khan-e Arzu’s thought to discuss the importance of Persian in medieval India, Delhi under its rulers, and language and literature, architecture and culture of the Muslims in India. With illustrations, it focuses on the present-day Indian policy-making approach vis-à-vis the past and attitudes that negate India’s medieval experience.
