CIP (Cataloguing-in-Publication) Data From India
The importance of cataloguing in the world of libraries and publishing is well known to everyone including those who go to libraries to read books.
Cataloguing-in-Publication data (CIP data), also termed as
pre-publication catalogue record, is the basic catalogue record
created by experts in advance of publication of a book and the same is then
printed therein on the copyright page or the verso of title page.
DK Agencies, being the largest bibliographic data services agency
in India, for indigenous publications has been providing CIP Data
to the publishers since late 1970s. This data is currently being provided to
those publishers who approach DK for it.
Benefits of CIP data
To the Publishers:
- Libraries prefer to order titles which have the CIP data printed on them
- This will increase the sale of the publication
- Publishers can easily identify the particular topics covered by each book and create the sales catalogues accordingly
To the Book Trade:
- Booksellers can easily identify the particular topics covered by each book and offer the same to the relevant customers
To the Libraries:
- Libraries do not have to spend much time in creating a final catalogue record
- Libraries save a lot in terms of staff costs
- Book is available to its readers much faster
- Books in various languages and scripts (particularly non-Roman) can be easily identified if they carry the CIP data in romanized format
To the Users:
- Users/readers can look the CIP data to know the subject area/topic to decide if the same fits into their fields of research/study
- Books in various languages and scripts (particularly non-Roman) can be easily identified if they carry the CIP data in romanized format
