This book documents the history of labour movement in Pakistan. Focusing on the textile industry in the urban conglomeration of Karachi, it provides an in-depth analysis of the workers, their organization, their leaders and their interaction with management and the state.

The analysis extends from the workplace to the workers’ communities, shedding new light not only on labour relations and social policy, but also on urban development issues. It also examines ethnic issues between the northerners and the Muhajirs, who were more skilled professionals in the industry.
