Title Review

This book examines the Portuguese missions and missionaries on the Tamil coast and hinterland from the early sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries. Based on archival material and field data, it studies the socio-cultural interaction between the missionaries and the native people of Tamil Nadu, focusing on the role of Catholic missionaries and institutions of Catholic Christianity. It deals with the changes in Tamil society as a result, particularly the changes in approaches, strategies and schemes where social development is concerned. It brings out the Portuguese contribution to Tamil language and the printing press. It also informs about various aspects of the Tamil Christian life and everyday practices in it. It also views the architectural and artistic patterns that resulted from impact of Christianity n the Tamil land by examining Portuguese religious architecture and ecclesiastical art.
