Title Review

PENUGONDA (big fort) occupies a strategic position -- controlling, as it does, a threshold midway between the Western Ghats and the lowlands of the Eastern coast. Located in the dry uplands of Anantpur district (in the Rayalaseema region, Andhra Pradesh), it was coveted by the rulers of southern India: not because it commanded a fertile environment, but because the rugged hill (3000 feet), on which the fort was built, provided them with a stronghold in a crucial area. The Hoysalas established an outpost here so as to defend their conquests against their rivals in the East. When the rulers of Vijayanagara Empire replaced the Hoysalas, Bukka (1344-77 AD) moved to Penugonda. This indicated the thrust towards the south of this newborn empire.

Focussing on a strategic locality, like Penugonda, Professor Vasantha explores a comparatively uncharted terrain in the historiography of medieval India. Piecing together diverse inscriptions: from the 14th to the 17th centuries, she not only opts for a different access to the south Indian history, but also constructs a colourful mosaic from which emerge the contours of Penugonda, in all their sharpness and clarity.

The book also devotes special attention to the religious history of this town which was a centre of worship for Hindus, Jains and Muslims as many rulers built and maintained temples and mosques here. And, in addition to a fresh evaluation of inscriptions bearing on the importance of Penugonda, it includes a lucid narrative account of Penugonda''s monuments, antiquities, temples, mosques, tanks, sculpture and iconography. Supplementing the study are 50 photographic reproductions: in both colour and b/w; besides several line-drawings.

R Vasantha is Professor of History, Sri Krishnadevaraya University, Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh.
