Title Review

The articles presented at a national seminar address issues dealt with by Indian women novelists today. Covering the writings of Jhumpa Lahiri, Anuradha Roy, Temsula Ao, Anita Nair, Shobha De, Manju Kapur and others, they discuss women’s issues as approached by these writers: Dalit and Hindu patriarchy, struggles involved in realising one’s identity, the life of a spinster, the anxiety of career, marriage and divorce for women, and the changing image of women today. Quoting from the novels of these writers, they explore the psyche of the women characters in Kiran Desai’s The Inheritance of Loss and women’s individuality as expressed by Shashi Deshpande in Moving On among other topics.
