Title Review

Banaras: the ancient Kashi, is one of the world’s oldest cities. Widely celebrated as a key religious and cultural centre of India, it is also traditionally famed for its textile industry. In fact, the textile industry here has further added to city’s importance. The amazing accoutrements of Banaras (Kashi) today find a distinct place among the exhibits of many national and international museums – leave alone their corroborating evidence in ancient literature and archaeological findings. Its gorgeously splendid textiles, which once adorned the Indian royalty, the nobility, and the richest of the rich, were much sought after in the foreign lands as well. The Buddha, it is said, was shrouded in a fine Banarasi cloth. The foreign travellers’ accounts praise the traditional textiles of Banaras in the highest terms. Developed from the author’s years of painstaking research, this book traces the history of Banaras’ textile industry: from a remote past to the present day – against the backdrop of its rich cultural legacy. Beginning with the city’s traditional weaving and embroidery industries, it spells out, in detail, the whole process of textile production – focusing specially on its export-oriented textiles, its textile artisans, its art of weaving, and its at once characteristic designs. The author also describes the weaving techniques, instruments, raw material employed by Banaras textile industry and, among other aspects, the socioeconomic condition of weavers, embroiderers and other artisans engaged in textile industry. The book is generously illustrated with both colour and b/w photographs and line-drawings showing a large variety of old as well as new designs that lend a unique charm to the textiles of Banaras. The book is the outcome of the author’s doctoral research at the Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi.
