Title Review

Questioning the widely prevalent view that there was no historical writing in early India, the book highlights how ancient Indian had a great historical tradition, though with a difference. The author: a highly distinguished historian, here shows up a huge variety of ancient Indian writings: ranging from embedded history to historical texts. Professor Romila Thapar takes a fresh look at the Vedic corpus, the Ramayana, the Mahabharata, the itahas-purana traditions, the Buddhist and Jaina canon, the historiographical and biographical literature, diverse inscriptions, a variety of chronicles and, these besides writings of other genres, not as sources of history, but as a civilization’s many ways of thinking about and writing its history.

Romila Thapar: a historian of international renown, is Emeritus Professor of History at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi; Fellow of the British Academy; and holds Honorary D.Litt, each from the universities of Calcutta, Oxford, and Chicago.
