Title Review

Coast, for the scholars of coastal histories, is not merely the strip of territory facing the sea and its wider components, as one moves inland; but rather covers the vast areas -- far inland, which are impacted by the sea in many different ways, including their environment, climatic conditions, vegetation, and patterns of socioeconomic formation, among other things. In the past, these regions inevitably looked seawards not only for their environmental and seasonal changes, but also for their commercial networks, movement of their manufactures, and also for the arrival of overseas merchants, priests, travellers, all of which cumulatively helped in turning the wheels of society and the economy. Bringing together a range of micro-studies, this volume examines significant themes bearing on the society and ecology of different coastal regions of India, specially from the present-day states of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Goa, and Maharshtra. Dr Yogesh Sharma is currently Associate Professor at the Centre of Historical Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.
